I love this piece of advice given from Manuel’s father. I have CAPITALIZED the part I feel is most important.
In 1942 while a member of the Northwestern University golf team I was a finalist in the NCAA Intercollegiate Championship. Upon my return home, my father asked me how I had played. I answered, “I played very well.” Then he asked me if I knew what I was doing. I answered, “Yes, I do.” His last question was: “Does it work?” My answer was, “Yes, if I do it, it works.” Then he said, “Son, if you know what you are doing and it works, spend the rest of your life perfecting it, and remember that if you should miss a shot, IT SIMPLY MEANS THAT YOU DID NOT DO WHAT YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO DO, IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG, SO GET BACK TO WHAT YOU SHOULD DO.” This meant–get back to your concept and perform it. No better advice could be given to anyone who wishes to maintain the game of golf at the highest level possible.
